X Live in Los Angles DVD
5/22/2005
OK, There may be a few poor souls who don't know who X is so let me clue you in. X is a band from Los Angles that emerged from the first wave of west coast punk before the "punk sound" was codified and rehashed. They are a true original, mixing punk energy, rockabilly riffs and lyrics of cheating, loving, loss and desperation into something that can't be pigeonholed. They survived and thrived well past their punk contemporaries to become a true all-time great band; genres be damned. If you haven't been in the front row of an X concert, with Billy Zoom's silver sparkled Gretch guitar turning your ears inside out as he smiles down at you in his leather jacket well, I pity you. X has a well deserved reputation as a can't-be-missed live show; always delivering with energy and enthusiasm that keeps the material relevent.
The DVD features a solid set of 21 songs delivered with classic X style. All my favorites are included. The stage show and video work is mercifully free of any production pizzaz. The feeling is more like being at the show rather than watching a jazzed up video so you really get to see the band in action. The sound quality is quite good as well; nearly as good as the original recordings in many cases.
There is a little bit of commentary on the DVD about the history of X. I think with their 25 year history they could have dug up more photos to include as a bonus on the DVD. I'm glad they included a bonus feature of John Doe and Exene Cervanka singing an acoustic version of See How We Are; it's an awesome track.
If you are an X fan you need this DVD. If you don't know every song by heart yet, well, here is your chance to get a front row ticket.
X is offering SkateRock.com readers a chance to win a free copy of this DVD. Enter to win here. You can also purchase it from Shout Factory.
